Sub-Zero 500 Series (501R, 501F, 511, 532, 542, 550, 561, 590)

No electronic diagnostics on this generation. The 500 Series manual documents temperature controls, a lighted freezer control, an ice maker switch with an indicator lamp, automatic defrost and a master power switch on the 590 — and no panel that reports a fault to you.

What fails with age

Assembly How it shows
Condenser and the grille fan Lint packs the coil, the cabinet loses ground on a warm afternoon, and the compressor stops cycling off. One fan behind the grille cools the machine area on these cabinets and it runs with either compressor.
Door and drawer gaskets A seal that has taken a set lets room air past one corner. Frost comes back in the same place after every clear-out, and the door needs a shove to catch.
Defrost element and water pan Crackling and sizzling during a defrost is documented behaviour. Water arriving on the floor under the grille instead of in the pan is not.
Ice maker module and fill cup Hollow or fused cubes, or a mould that stays full. On a cabinet this age scale from city water is the first thing to look for, not the last.
Lamps and door switches A compartment that stays dark is the switch as often as the bulb. On the 590 the dispenser lamp is meant to hold on for five seconds after the switch is released.

Parts status

Part Supply
Door and drawer gaskets The commonest part fitted to this generation, and ordered against the model and serial rather than the series.
Fan motors Generally obtainable. The plate settles which one, because a single fan serves the machine area behind the grille.
Defrost components Usually a stock repair rather than a hunt: a heater, a limit or a sensor.
Ice maker modules Availability varies by cabinet. Where a module is no longer catalogued the work is quoted after the diagnosis and never before.
Interior fittings and dispenser trim The hardest category. Shelves, bins and dispenser parts are the items most often superseded or simply gone.

What a visit involves

  1. 1Model and serial read off the plate first, so what is on the van matches the cabinet rather than the series.
  2. 2Temperatures logged in both compartments with a probe, and the room temperature beside the unit taken at the same time.
  3. 3Grille off, condenser and its fan cleared and inspected. The interval the 500 Series manual sets is every three to six months under normal use.
  4. 4Defrost, then the seals, then the ice maker, checked in that order, because on a cabinet of this age that is the order they give trouble in.
  5. 5The band and the figure inside it agreed with you before anything is dismantled or ordered.

Repairs on this series usually land in these bands: Door seal or drawer gasket$270–$680; Fan motor, evaporator side or condenser side$320–$700; Defrost circuit: heater, limit or thermistor$280–$610. The figure inside the band is agreed before anything comes apart.

The designation is on the plate , inside the door near the top hinge. At this age the useful question is what goes first . Work on these cabinets is booked as refrigerator repair .

Follow-ups

How do I find out how old a 500 Series cabinet is?
Read the plate. A Sub-Zero rating plate carries the manufacture date alongside the model and serial, so there is nothing to decode and no lookup to run. If the plate has been painted over or lost, the installer or the previous owner's paperwork is the next place to try. Sub-Zero Repair Service Denver can read it with you on the phone, (720) 770-4189.
Are parts still made for these cabinets?
For most of what actually fails, yes. Seals, fan motors and defrost components are ordinary orders. Interior fittings, dispenser trim and some ice maker modules are where a number turns out to be dead, and that is settled against your model and serial before any promise is made about the repair.
How often should the condenser be cleaned on a 500 Series?
The 500 Series manual asks for every three to six months under normal use, which is more often than the six to twelve months Sub-Zero sets for its later Classic cabinets. Lift the grille, then a soft-bristle brush and a vacuum hose along the fins. Wear gloves and switch the power off first.

Checked against

  • Sub-Zero 500 Series Information Manual The model list, the three-to-six-month condenser interval, the single grille fan and the 590 master power switch.
  • Sub-Zero model number key What R and F mean in 501R and 501F, and the letters that follow a Sub-Zero model number.
  • Sub-Zero serial tag locations Plate inside the door near the top hinge on 500, 600, BI and Classic cabinets.

Two ways in, and nothing to fill in

Give us the model number and what the cabinet is holding. That is usually enough to know which circuit is at fault before anyone is dispatched — and which parts belong on the van.
